Eye Exams Q & A

What happens during an eye exam?

An eye exam involves a series of tests and exams to check the overall health of your eyes, in addition to how well you can see. After gathering some of your current health information, in addition to your personal and family medical history, your optometrist lets you know which evaluations you may need. Comprehensive eye exams often include:

  • Refraction assessment
  • Eye muscle test
  • Retinal examination
  • Color vision evaluation
  • Visual field test
  • Visual acuity test

If you have risk factors for glaucoma, like if it runs in your family, you may also need a glaucoma screening known as tonometry. This test, known as the air puff test, checks the fluid pressure inside your eye, which can lead to a warning sign of glaucoma.

Do I need an eye exam even if I do not wear glasses?

Yes! Thinking you can safely skip a routine eye exam isn’t true. Even if you don’t wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, you still need an eye exam regularly. Eye exams are preventive visits to ensure your eyes are healthy.

If you do have any underlying issues, such as early indications of glaucoma, your optometrist at In Focus Vision Center & Eyecare can find an effective way to treat or slow down the progression of the disease.

Plus, vision changes can be subtle. Your dedicated optometrist can check your vision to determine if you have any slight changes and if needed, order corrective eyewear to help you see more clearly.

How often do I need an eye exam?

It depends on your overall eye health, any vision changes, and family history of eye disease. For instance, if you’re generally healthy, have no history of eye conditions, and don’t currently need corrective eyewear, the team at In Focus Vision Center & Eyecare may only need to see you every 2-4 years.

If you need corrective contacts or glasses, or have a chronic eye disease, plan on scheduling an eye exam once a year. It’s always recommended to come in annually after age 65, even if you’ve always had healthy eyes and vision.
