Orthokeratology Q & A

What is orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k for short, is the revolutionary and nonsurgical way to correct your vision. But to better understand it, you need to know a few things about how your eyes work. The surface of your eyes — your corneas — contain specialized lenses that allow light to enter your eye.

As light enters, it gets sent to the back of your eye to your retina where certain nerve cells — called rods and cones — convert the light into electrical impulses. Your optic nerve then sends these impulses to your brain, which produces an image. This is how you see.

In some cases, though, your corneas are misshapen, which distorts the light that enters. This causes blurry or distorted vision.

Orthokeratology works by reshaping your corneas to correct how light gets focused on your retinas. By wearing corneal reshaping contact lenses overnight, you can wake up the next morning with clearer vision.

Why do I need orthokeratology?

Your optometrist may recommend orthokeratology therapy to improve your vision as an alternative to eyeglasses and daily-wear contact lenses. Orthokeratology is used to correct:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)

  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)

  • Astigmatism

In some cases, ortho-k is even recommended for men and women who struggle with chronic dry eye or severe allergies and struggle with wearing contact lenses on a daily basis.

How long does it take for orthokeratology to work?

It varies, although orthokeratology can produce results in a very short time frame. The team at In Focus Vision Center & Eyecare has specialized training in orthokeratology treatment plans and spends time teaching you how to insert, remove, and care for your corrective lenses.

It’s important to follow your ortho-k plan precisely and return to the office for a follow-up after your first night to ensure your lenses are fitting properly. You need to continue wearing your lenses every night to maintain your newly corrected vision since your cornea can continue to change shapes.
